DESCRIPTION

Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition – SCADA – usually refers to a central system that monitors and controls a complete site. The bulk of the site control is actually performed automatically by a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) or by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
The PLC/RTU connects to physical equipment, and reads status data such as the open/closed status from a switch or a valve. By sending signals to equipment the PLC/RTU can control equipment, such as opening or closing aswitch or a valve, or setting the speed of a pump.
The information provided by the PLCs/RTUs is usually in a crude user-unfriendly format. The SCADA gathers information from the PLCs via some form of communication method, formats and combines the information and presents it in user friendly visualisation format, utilising graphical and tabular representations. The SCADA additionally stores a record of all historical data for future access and analysis or for forwarding to a Corporate Information Warehouse
