Process industry is exposed to risks from incidents like fire, explosion, equipment malfunction, etc. causing fatalities and/or monetary losses. Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) have been used for many years to perform Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) in the process industries. Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) are applied for safety, but also to protect the environment or to prevent equipment damage and loss. If instrumentation is to be effectively used for safety instrumented functions, it is essential that this instrumentation achieves certain minimum standards and performance levels.
The course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the required safety management system, how to perform LOPA to identify the need for an SIS and to assign the SIL, how to design the SIS to meet the specified SIL, how to verify that the SIL can be achieved, and how to develop an operating plan to maintain the SIL throughout the SIS life.
