1. Basic electrical layout of the electrical power and traction system
2. Electric traction (i.e. what it is used for on the train – auxiliaries such as lighting and air conditioning and traction for driving the wheels) :
- DC (as in Sydney)
- AC (as in Brisbane)
3. How we get the electricity to the train (i.e. the OHW system) – sectional diagrams
4. Brief review of different types of OHW systems
5. How we get the electricity to the OHW :
- Traction substations and major components (e.g transformers, reactors, rectifiers, circuit breakers)
- Sectioning huts
- DC feeders
- Special requirements for AC traction
6. How do we get the electricity to the traction substations?
- HVAC substations and lines (overhead and underground)
7. A basic overview of the need for the power study
8. The basics of earthing
9. Managing the issues of electrolysis with DC traction
WHO WILL BENEFIT
Anyone who needs an introduction to the electrical systems in electric rail systems. Roles such as estimators, work programmers and project managers who do not have a background in electric traction are often required to estimate, program and project manage jobs that cover the whole project of building a rail line, where the electrics are just one component of the overall project.
